Upon hearing of my love of Shakespeare, the team at RCC mentioned that they had just received a donation of a Shakespeare themed textile. This was the start of one of my larger projects during this internship, which will unfold itself here on my blog in due course.

This 1960s Tibor Reich textile called Age of Kings was designed by Pamela Kay for production by Tibor’s company. Based in Shakespeare’s hometown, Reich created a number of different textiles for the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust (SBT), including carpets and tapestries. This particular design was commissioned by the SBT to celebrate the 400 year anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth.

There will be no escaping Shakespeare on this blog, as I continue to delve into the history, material and context of this Reich textile and more during this year when we honour the 400 year anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. In time you will even get to see the entire textile…
